Iron and Talavera ceramic wall adornment, ‘Handsome Catrin’ (Mexico)

$147.95

Meaning “dapper,” El Catrin gets his nickname for always dressing smartly, especially for Day of the Dead. J. Blas creates a handsome iron portrait of the smiling skeleton with a cigar in his mouth, surrounded by angel wings. Blas is adapting the caricature originally created by Jos Guadalupe Posadas, a renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist (1852-1913). Catrin and Catrina, his beloved, were intended as caricature symbols of Mexico’s politicians, implying that after all, they too die. Since then, Catrin has become an essential element of Day of the Dead celebrations though not always with the political underpinnings. Blas frames Catrin’s portrait with florid ceramic Talavera tiles on wood.
